Installing Timesheet 7.6: UNIX
The Unix installation packages are named:
JournyxTimesheet_76m1_Linux_i386_glibc_2.1_REDHAT_6_and_7.tar.gzJournyxTimesheet_76m1_Linux_i386_glibc_2.2.93_REDHAT8.tar.gzJournyxTimesheet_76m1_Linux_i386_glibc_2.3_REDHAT9_to_RHAS4.tar.gz
Each of these are unix 'tar' files compressed with GNU zip. If you do not have gzip or gunzip installed on your system, there is a compressed executable of gunzip in the same directory as the install image.
Special Note For Professional Services Tools Users
If your organization already has a version of Timesheet™ installed and you are using custom or standard PS Tools from Journyx, please contact the Journyx Support Team before migrating to Timesheet 7.6.
Regarding The Account Used For Installation
Timesheet cannot be installed as root. If you install Timesheet as yourself then it will cease to function if your account is ever locked or removed from the server. Therefore Journyx recommends that you create a new standard user account on your server operating system specifically for Timesheet.
If you have multiple Timesheet installations on a server then each installation must have its own unique installing user account. Journyx recommends an easy-to-recognize name such as 'jtime' or 'jtime76', as this will greatly facilitate long-term administration of the application.
The account that used to install Timesheet will also be created within the application as the installing administrator account. This account should never be removed, hidden, disabled, or modified within Timesheet. This account can be used to administer the application, but it should not be modified to allow logging time, mileage or expenses. Those functions should be left to regular non-admin accounts within Timesheet.
Before you install Timesheet, su - to this account. Any time in the future that you need to perform administrative work on Timesheet you will need to su - to this account.
Installing Timesheet
Installation is designed to be extremely simple. The first step is to
decompress the installation package. For instance, if you are using
the Red Hat 7 version, type this:
gunzip < JournyxTimesheet_76_Linux_i386_glibc_2.1_REDHAT_6_and_7.tar.gz | tar xvf -
This will create a directory called jtime.
The next step is to move into this directory and run the jtinstall program, and follow the on screen prompts. At the first prompt type:
./jtinstall
You will be prompted for a portnumber. This is the port on which you would like to have the webserver service requests. This defaults to 8784. Usually, webservers run on port 80 or 8080. If a webserver is already active on your machine, installing Journyx Timesheet will not interfere with it, because they will be running on different ports. If you choose to specify a port, please ensure that you chose a port number greater than 1024 because Timesheet runs as a non-root user.
NOTE: Journyx Timesheet uses the specified port, plus the
next two port numbers for its internal caching and database server.
Therefore, if you have another service running on port 8785, then 8784
should not be chosen as the portnumber for Journyx Timesheet.
After the installation is complete there will be a message with a URL to point your browser to Journyx Timesheet. This URL will be of the form:
http://yourservermachinename.com:portnumber/
Your initial user name and password will both be set to the login name of the installing user.
It is best to create a new user (perhaps tadmin) and su to this new user before installation. The installing user will own all of the web and database processes and all of the files installed.
To uninstall the product, change your working directory to the install
location (installplace in the example above) and type pi/bin/uninstall.
