Installing Timesheet: Windows NT

These are complete instructions, from download to first usage, for turning your Windows NT Server into a Journyx Timesheet Server.

Step By Step:

  1. Download Journyx Timesheet
  2. Before You Begin
  3. Journyx Timesheet Setup
  4. Database Setup
  5. First Login

Before You Begin

You should be logged on to the NT Server with Administrator privileges.

The following software must be installed on your NT Server or Workstation:

  • NT Service Pack 3
  • Internet Explorer 4 or 5
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server
  • Windows Scripting Host (for automatic IIS integration)

If you are not sure which of these are installed on your machine, you can skip directly to Journyx Timesheet Setup; you will be directed back to this step if you are missing any of these components.

Installing the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack

All of the required software is included in the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, however you must first have Service Pack 3 installed to proceed. Once you have installed Service Pack3, Option Pack 4, and a Journyx Timesheet Product , it is advised that you then install Service Pack 6a. Please note that there are 2 versions of Microsoft's Service Pack 6, and the earlier version (Service Pack 6) requires a hotfix available from their download site. If you have Service Pack 6a, you do not require this hotfix. Links to these sites are listed later in this document.

You cannot use Service Pack 4 with Option Pack 4. There is a bug in Service Pack 4 which breaks Internet Information Server. If you want to install Journyx Timesheet and Service Pack 5 or 6, the recommended steps are as follows:

  1. Install Windows NT or Server 4.0
  2. Install Service Pack 3
  3. Install Option Pack 4 (IIS and WSH)
  4. Install Journyx Timesheet
  5. Install Service Pack 5 or 6

You may already have Option Pack 4 on cdrom, but it is also available as a free download.

For NT Workstation:http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/

For NT Server:http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/all/downloads.asp

Once you have the Option Pack, install it as follows:

  1. Launch Setup

    • If you have the Windows NT Option Pack CD

      1. Insert the cdrom into the drive.
      2. If the cdrom launches automatically, proceed to the next step.
      3. If the cdrom does not launch automatically, go to "My Computer," and then to the cdrom drive. There will be an index.html, which you double-click.

    • If you downloaded the Option Pack

      1. Find the directory into which you downloaded the Pack.
      2. Double-click on the file named index.html.

  2. Install Prerequisites

The previous step started a browser window.

Click "Install" to the left. On the right will appear a list of products.

They must be installed in a specific order, although it is likely that you already the Service Pack and IE installed.

    1. Service Pack 3 or 6
    2. Internet Explorer 4
    3. Window NT 4.0 Option Pack

  3. Service Pack 3 (skip this step if already installed)

Click "Windows NT Service Pack 3 (X86)".

No decisions need to be made during this installation - just accept all defaults.

You will be forced to reboot the NT Server.

(Installation of Service Pack 6 is similar.)

  4. Internet Explorer 4.01 (skip this step if already installed)

    1. Click "Internet Explorer 4.01 (X86)"
    2. Accept all defaults for this installation

Note: The Active Desktop will take some getting used to, so you may not wish to install it at this time.

You will be forced to reboot the NT Server.

  5. Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

Do you already have any part of the Option Pack installed?

    • Yes

      1. Close your browser installation session.
      2. Run the Option Pack Setup program, found on your Start Menu.
      3. Accept all defaults until you get to a dialog for selecting the installed components.
      4. Make sure that "Microsoft Management Console" and "Windows Scripting Host" both have checks in their boxes.
      5. If you are running NT Server, make sure to check "Internet Information Server".
      6. If you are running NT Workstation, make sure to check "Personal Web Server".
      7. Continue with the installation, accepting all defaults.

    • No

Click "Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack" in your browser. Accept the defaults for this installation, selecting the "Typical" install, which gives you everything you need.

You will be forced to reboot the NT Server.

You have now finished preparing your Windows NT computer for use as a Journyx Timesheet server. You can now proceed directly to the Journyx Timesheet Setup.

Journyx Timesheet Setup

Log on to the NT Server with Administrator privileges.

When you downloaded jtime, you received a self-extracting executable file. If you choose to download the file instead of run it directly, you will have to double-click on its icon to begin installation once download is complete.

If you get an error saying that you have not installed all the prerequisite software, you should go back and read how to Install the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

Once the installer is started, you will be prompted for installation information.

On NT Server, you will be asked to enter a port number. This number will be part of the url you use to access Journyx Timesheet. The default is 80, which is the default website for IIS. If no website is currently using the specified port, a new website will be created for you. On NT Workstation, you cannot choose a port number, so Journyx Timesheet is installed on the port 80, the default.

Note:This port and the subsequent port number must not be used by any networking services other than Journyx Timesheet and IIS. So, if you install Journyx Timesheet on port 90, then port 91 must also be available.

Upon completion of setup, you will be forced to reboot your NT Server. When it is fully rebooted, the Database Setup will automatically proceed.

Database Setup

Log on to the NT Server with Administrator privileges.

Directly after login, a script will run in a DOS box, to perform the automated IIS integration. Upon its completion, a browser will open with the Initial Database Setup screen.

You will be given a selection of databases:

  • Internal Database

This is the default database shipped with Journyx Timesheet. Use of this database does not require any additional software, and it uses the same file format as other Microsoft applications including Access.

  • External Database

This option allows jtime to integrate with your existing Microsoft SQL Server, via an ODBC connection.

If you choose to use the Internal Database, select it in the browser and press "Setup Database". Next, it will ask you if you have an existing database file. Since this is your first installation, you should select "New Database File."

Note: This step can take anywhere from ten seconds to a minute to complete. However, it is important that you not stop the script before you receive the message that the database has been successfully configured.

After your database has been initialized, skip ahead to First Login.

If you choose to use an external database, you must now configure the SQL Data Source.
