In the end, all we have is our attention. Where are you spending yours? Time is the ultimate wasting resource. It is the worst kind of inventory, it’s worse than lettuce rotting on the back dock of the warehouse, it expires every second, and once a moment is gone, it is gone forever and it’s impossible to retrieve
We spend much of our lives on urgent things, answering email, answering the phone, checking Facebook. Rarely are these urgent things important. The fire alarm is urgent and important. Phone calls are usually urgent and unimportant. Watching TV is usually unimportant and not urgent.
Getting educated is important but not urgent, monitoring your 401k is similar. It is the important but not urgent things that we never get time for.
The trick to being successful is finding more time for the important non-urgent things by stealing time from the un-important places.
So how do you do this?
Track how you spend your time, not forever, but for a while. Categorize your time into buckets, into the 4 quadrants of important urgent (the fire) important non-urgent (the class you’re taking) unimportant non urgent (TV) and urgent but not important (email and Facebook).
See if you can figure out a way to steal time from somewhere and put it into the important non-urgent camp.
One suggestion is to read all your email at the same time every day and spend all your Facebook time in a bucket all at once.
Hopefully this will free up some time for self-improvement.
Now this philosophy can also extend to your department, your division, your team, or your company if you can get some metrics around those entities.
